What do investors ask about cost per customer and payback?

Investors want to know that money put into growth comes back. Expect questions on four numbers: what a paying customer costs you, how many months it takes to earn that back, how many customers are still paying months later, and where people drop out of your funnel. The strongest answer is a dashboard that shows all four from real data, not a slide with estimates.
The four numbers
- Cost per paying customer. Total spend on a channel divided by the paying customers it brought in, by channel, not blended across everything.
- Payback period. How many months of gross profit it takes to earn back what a customer cost. Under three months is a strong line for an early-stage company.
- Retention by cohort. Of the customers who started in a given month, how many are still paying one, three and six months later.
- Funnel conversion. Every step from the first ad view to payment, with the step where most people drop out called out.
How to have them ready
- Track from the first click to payment from day one, so the numbers are real when the questions come.
- Run growth on a small, deliberate budget first, prove one channel works under the payback line, then put more behind it.
- Keep months of cohorts. A single good month is a data point, three months is a trend.
